pd3-teaser.jpg

PD3 is the new postal distributing vehicle for the larger cities in Western Europe. The bike is a tricycle with rear wheel steering and asymmetrical shape, which allows the postal worker to use the bike in different ways during the workday. The PD3 assures an efficient and comfortable working environment, what ever the post is delivered in city centres or in residential neighbourhoods.
PD3 is developed focusing on ergonomically and functional principles ensuring the best possible working conditions throughout the postal workers day, from sorting and packing to delivering the mail.

The PD3 is an innovative solution with its asymmetrical structure and two steering wheels. These features allow the postal worker to push the bike in front of him in the city centre and ride the bike as a conventional bike in the residential neighbourhood.

Trying it out myself

PD3_research

The starting point of the project was of course trying out the life as a bicycling postman yourselves. (Yup, that’s me casually hanging out on my ‘postman-bike’) It gave great insight into the challenges you face transporting up to 25 kg of mail through the city everyday.

Award winning design

The PD3 bike won a silver prize at the International Bicycle Design Competition 2005 in Taipei, Taiwan. You can’t tell from the picture but at this moment I’m SO disappointed that we didn’t win the competition… so close! Next time, maybe!
